Grief Support For the Children of Our Community

Camp Conquer began as a private donation to provide children affected by the loss of their homes due to flooding with grief services. With additional donations from the community and leveraging The Hospice of Baton Rouge’s network of volunteers, three-day and five-day camps became a reality for children in Baton Rouge.

"It has always been a dream of mine to provide children grief support in a fun, camp-like setting...Through our hospice services, we are very familiar with how to help families deal with grief."

Helping the Children in Our Community

Camp Conquer teaches children how to identify, express, and most importantly conquer their emotions through activities that takes them through five stages of grief. Each day, children are broken up into separate age groups so counselors can provide specialized activities and guidance. Because the camp runs solely on donations and volunteers it is free of charge for all children that attend.

It is common for parents to keep up a strong front for children to help them through a loss, but in reality it may be healthier and more effective to allow children to express their emotions freely in a way that promotes healing.

One Donation Is All It Takes

“When we received the donation for grief counseling specifically for children, we knew we wanted to use it as a launch pad into something greater and more meaningful,” said Catherine Schendel, CEO at The Hospice of Baton Rouge. “It’s been incredible to see how much support we received hosting Camp Conquer and we look forward to bringing it back even bigger each year to help as many children in our community as possible.”
