What is palliative care?
Palliative care is specialized medical care for individuals with serious illnesses. Our team helps improve the quality of life for both patients and their families by assisting with advance care planning, symptom relief, and establishing personalized goals of care.
Who provides palliative care?
Palliative Care of Baton Rouge consists of nursing staff, social workers, and chaplains who collaborate closely with facility staff to ensure seamless coordination of your care.
Who can benefit from palliative care?
- Patients with Life-Limiting Illnesses:
Including cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), congestive heart failure (CHF), kidney disease, liver disease, dementia, HIV/AIDS, stroke, persistent coma, and various others. - Patients or Families Wishing to Discuss Advance Care Planning:
Including understanding your illness and choices for medical care, reviewing advance directives, navigating the healthcare system, and comfort-directed therapy. - Patients with Symptoms and Stress of a Serious Illness:
Including pain, dyspnea, nausea, vomiting, coughing, delirium, insomnia, anxiety, agitation, and severe dysphagia. - Patients Receiving Home Health or Personal Care Services:
Palliative care can be provided alongside these services.
Where is palliative care provided?
Care is typically provided at the patient’s home or wherever the patient may call home, such as an assisted living or nursing facility.
Can I keep my physician?
Yes, you can. You will still be able to attend appointments with your regular doctors. We work closely with your doctors to manage your care while you are unable to visit their clinics or offices.
Is there a cost?
Medicare and some private insurances can cover the cost of palliative care services. We will work with your insurance company to address any costs or billing needs related to the services. As a non-profit organization, our mission is to provide these services regardless of insurance coverage.
Can I Still Receive Ongoing Chemo, Radiation, or Dialysis Treatments?
Yes, you can. Treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, and dialysis can be paired with palliative care services. Home health services or physical therapy can also be combined with palliative care.
Who qualifies for palliative care?
Anyone with a serious illness such as cancer, CHF, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, dementia/Alzheimer’s, CVA, COPD, liver disease, renal disease, or HIV qualifies for palliative care.
What parishes do you serve?
We provide services to the parishes of East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, Tangipahoa, Livingston, Iberville, Ascension, St. James, St. John the Baptist, Assumption, East Feliciana, and West Feliciana.
